May 2016

5/1/2016

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
It’s newsletter time,

I have no clue what to say to you.

There, as poor as my limerick is, I have honored Limerick Day which is celebrated each May 12th. However, that is not the only day observed in May. We could focus on May first which is Mother Goose Day but I always thought some of her stories too dark. There is poor Humpty Dumpty who can’t be put back together; the poor lady living squeezed into a shoe with a bunch of kids (someone call CPS!); a poor grandma eaten by a wolf; a nasty spider that scares a little girl so much that she drops her food and well . . . you get the idea. Of course there are other holidays that we enjoy celebrating. Top of the list is Mother’s Day, of course. It is a day in which we honor mothers and the wonderful things they represent:
unconditional love, unwavering support, patience, and let’s not forget the magical healing powers of a mother’s kiss. They are without doubt an earthly demonstration of what God’s love is like.
We also take time in May to honor the service men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our way of life in this wonderful country. There are no adequate words to convey how much we owe them. Every morning we can look out our window and see the Stars and Stripes waving is due in great part to them. Every evening that we sit down with our families to dinner in a country that allows
us to pursue our dreams is due in great part to their sacrifice. Although “Thank You” does not seem sufficient, let us at least say that. These men and women gave their lives because they believed our country was worth it. They too are an earthly example of a Godly attribute; sacrifice for those you love.
There is one more day I want to touch on with you. It is celebrated on the 15th of May this year. It is Pentecost Sunday, a day when we celebrate the descending of the Holy Spirit upon all believers. That Holy Spirit has descended and indwelt in every man and woman who has proclaimed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We are told in Ephesians 1:13 that He is the seal of promise of our salvation. We are given other instructions through the New Testament regarding His role in our lives. He is our guide and our teacher reminding us of all that we have been taught (John 14:26). He is our enabler who gives us the words to say when sharing the Gospel message of Jesus Christ (Luke 12:12; Acts 4:8). He is our equipper who provides us with Spiritual Gifts for ministry service (1 Cor. 12:11). I once prepared a full southern breakfast for a friend from Long Island, NY. When he sat down, he noticed the country gravy alongside the pile of biscuits I made. He asked me “what’s that?” I told him it was gravy. He then asked “what do youse do wid it?” To him gravy was not a breakfast food group like it was for us in Texas, so he was not sure what to do with it. As we ponder the many days we celebrate in May and why, allow me to leave you with a question regarding the Holy
Spirit in your life: “what are you doing with it?”

Have a blessed May,

Vic
